Dancing Competition Rules

 

 

Competition Rules are as follows:

  1. An independent time keeper shall be appointed by the Organising Committee and a time sheet shall be presented by him/her to the adjudicators to enable them to deduct marks accordingly, if appropriate.
  2. The same person/persons should not adjudicate in more than one round of the ompetitions in any one year.

     

    The order of events are as follows:

     

    • Figure Dancing
    • Junior Solo Singing
    • Musical Group
    • Junior Recitation
    • Senior Solo Singing
    • Junior Musical Solo.
    • Junior Novelty Act
    • Group Disco Dancing
    • INTERVAL
    • Modern Music/Singing Group
    • Senior Novelty Act
    • Senior Musical Solo
    • Senior Recitation
    • Group Singing
    • Set Dancing

     

  3. With the exception of the dancing competitions, all competitors should use the amplification provided on stage. In the dancing competitions, musical accompaniment, whether live or taped, must use the amplification provided on stage.

Competitions

 

1) Figure Dancing

     

  1. Each team shall consist of not less than 4 and not more than 8 persons.
  2. Each team shall be permitted two substitutes only whose names must be stated on the official entry form.
  3. The organising committee shall not be responsible for providing musical accompaniment. Not more than 3 persons may provide live accompaniment. Taped music is permitted.
  4. The dance shall consist of two bodies and one figure.
  5. A lead-in and lead-out are permitted.
     
  6. Criteria for marks is as follows:

  7. Competitors in the Figure Dancing Competition may not perform in School of Dancing costumes. Wearing of wigs is not permitted.

2) Junior Solo Singing

 

  1. Each competitor must be under 16 on 11th Aug. in the year of the YehMAil Final of the Competition.
  2. A competitor shall not be permitted to name a substitute.
  3. Each competitor shall sing only one song in either English or Irish.
  4. The performance will last not longer than 4 minutes 30 seconds.
  5. Accompaniment with one instrument is permitted. Accompaniment, other than self-accompaniment, shall be off-stage. Electrified or battery operated instruments, piano, pre programmed instruments or backing tracks may not be used.

     

    Criteria for marks is as follows:


     

  6. Each competitor who exceeds the permitted time shall be penalised at the rate of three marks per minute or part of a minute.

3) Musical Group

 

  1. Each group shall consist of not less than 2 and not more than 5 persons.
  2. Each group shall be permitted 1 substitute only whose name must be stated on the official entry form.
  3. Each group will play two selections only, of contrasting character.
  4. The performance time permitted is 5 minutes.
  5. Electrified or battery-operated instruments, piano, pre programmed instruments or backing tracks may not be used.

     

  6. Criteria for marks is as follows:


     

  7. Competitors may change instruments between the two selections played.
  8. Each competitor who exceeds the permitted time shall be penalised at the rate of three marks per minute or part of a minute.

4) Junior Recitation

 

  1. Each competitor must be under 16 on 11th Aug. in the year of the YehMAil Final of the competition.
  2. A competitor shall not be permitted to name a substitute.
  3. Each competitor will recite only one recitation of not more than 6 minutes duration.
  4. The recitation may be either in English or Irish.
  5. Costumes may be worn and hand carried props are allowed.

     

  6. Criteria for marks is as follows:


     

  7. Background music is not permitted.
  8. Each competitor who exceeds the time limit will be penalised at the rate of three marks per minute or part of a minute.

5) Senior Solo Singing

 

  1. Each competitor must be over 16 in the year of the YehMAil Final of the competition.
  2. Rules 2 to 7 inclusive of the Junior Solo Singing Competition also apply to the Senior Solo Singing Competition.

     

6) Junior Musical Solo

 

  1. Each competitor must be under 16 on 11th Aug. in the year of the YehMAil Final of the competition.
  2. A competitor shall not be permitted to nominate a substitute.
  3. Each competitor shall play two selections only, of contrasting character.
  4. The performance time permitted is 5 minutes.
  5. Electrified or battery-operated instruments, piano, pre programmed instruments or backing tracks may not be used.
  6. A competitor may change instruments between the two selections played.

7) Junior Novelty Act

 

  1. Each competitor must be under 16 on 11th Aug. in the year of the YehMAil Final of the Competition.
  2. Each group shall consist of not less than 3 and not more than 8 persons.
  3. Each group shall be permitted 2 substitutes whose names must be stated on the official entry form.
  4. Each member of the competing group must have either a performing part or appear on stage.
  5. Only hand props are allowed.
  6. Live animals or birds are not allowed on stage. Naked flames cannot be used.
  7. There shall be no promotion of alcohol and/or illicit drugs in the performance.
  8. Each group shall be allowed 12 minutes to prepare, perform, clear and clean stage and show empty stage in that time.

     

  9. Criteria for marks is as follows:


     

  10. Each group which exceeds the permitted time shall be penalised at the rate of three marks per minute or part of a minute.

8) ) Group Disco Dancing

 

  1. Each group shall consist of not less than 3 and no more than 6 persons.
  2. Each team shall be permitted 2 substitutes only whose names must be stated on the official entry form.
  3. The choice of music will be at the discretion of the performing group.
  4. Back spins, head spins and hand spins are not permitted
  5. Refer to rules 9 and 14 in General Rules for competitions.

     

  6. Criteria for marks is as follows:

9) Modern Music/Singing Group

 

  1. Each group shall consist of not less than 2 and not more than 5 persons.
  2. Each group is allowed to have one member who may or may not play an instrument. The remaining members must play an instrument. The number of vocalists within the group is a minimum of one.
  3. Each group shall be permitted 1 substitute only whose name must be stated on the official entry form.
  4. Each group will perform 2 songs only, of contrasting character.
  5. The performance time permitted is 3 minutes per song.
  6. 'Set up' times is confined to 60 seconds.
  7. Electrified or battery-operated instruments may be used.

     

  8. Criteria for marks is as follows:


     

  9. Competitors may change instruments between the two selections played.
  10. Each competitor who exceeds the permitted time shall be penalised at the rate of three marks per minute or part of a minute.

10) Senior Novelty Act

 

  1. All competitors must be over 16 on the 11th Aug. in the year of the YehMAil Final of the competition. One competitor aged under 16 from the centre may be used.
  2. Rules 2 to 10 inclusive of the Junior Novelty Act Competition also apply to the Senior Novelty Act Competition.
  3. One member from another non-competing, affiliated centre within the same region is permitted to compete to make up a team in this competition.

 

11) Senior Musical Solo

 

  1. Each competitor must be over 16 on 11th Aug. in the year of the YehMAil final of the competition.
  2. Rules 2 to 8 inclusive of the Junior Musical Solo Competition also apply to the Senior Musical Solo Competition.

 

12) Senior Recitation

 

  1. Each competitor must be over 16 on 11th Aug. in the year of the YehMAil Final of the competition.
  2. Rules 2 to 8 inclusive of the Junior Recitation Competition also apply to the Senior Recitation Competition.

 

13) Group Singing

 

  1. Each group shall consist of not less than 2 and not more than 6 persons.
  2. Each group shall be permitted 1 substitute only whose name must be stated on the official entry form.
  3. Each group will sing only 2 songs, one slow tempo and one fast tempo.
  4. The overall performance time permitted is 8 minutes.
  5. Accompaniment with a maximum of 2 instruments per selection is permitted. Accompaniment other than from within the group shall be off-stage. Electrified or battery operated instruments, piano, pre programmed instruments or backing tracks may not be used.
  6. Competitors may change instruments between songs.

     

    Criteria for marks is as follows:


     

  7. Each group which exceeds the time limit shall be penalised at the rate of three marks per minute or part of a minute.

14) Set Dancing

 

  1. The competition is open to sets or half sets.
  2. Each team shall be permitted 2 substitutes whose names must be on the official entry form.
  3. The organising committee shall not be responsible for providing musical accompaniment. Not more than 3 persons may provide live musical accompaniment. Taped music is permitted.
  4. The dance shall consist only of two parts.
  5. A lead-in and a lead-out are permitted.
  6. Centres are not obliged to enter mixed teams.
